Many don’t make it further north than Sister Bay, which is a real shame! There is so much goodness as you continue your journey. There are the big draws like the Washington Island Ferry and the famous curvy road – but we’re not talking about those more well known things. We’re talking about the #HiddenGems that give Northern Door it’s personality. One of those is definitely Hügel Haus in Ellison Bay.
Lovingly known as Door County’s ‘Wurst’ Bar, this unsuspecting restaurant is open year round and offers authentic German cuisine. Hügel Haus in German means “House on the Hill” which is exactly what it is – and to be sure you don’t miss it – it’s connected to the historic HillSide Motel.
Once inside you’re greeted with a warm & welcoming environment, feeling like you’ve just stepped into someone’s lodge. The tall ceilings and oversized fireplace are magnificent. They have an amazing fish fry, but my favorite dish is the Käsespätzle shown here. If you go, be sure to grab an Old Fashioned and tell Sarah (our favorite waitress) we say hello!

There are so many amazing things in Door County that it’s almost impossible to choose our favorites. However, after spending so much time in Northern Door – we realized that there are some hidden gems that took us a while to discover and that many others may not know of. So we have decided to take some time feature them in what we’re calling our Hidden Gem Series!
